I Have A Comment

My blog address is GerbsRandomThoughts, so today that's what you're going to get.

Here's the deal. Over 2 years and 404 posts ago, I started writing this blog. Initially it was because I love to write and I loved the idea of others wanting to read what I had to write. Actually, I still write for those very reasons but now there is more.

Like an actor on the stage loves applause, a blogger on the internet loves comments. And today I propose that it we start leaving them more often.

Not necessarily always "Hey, great job!" kind of comments every time, and not necessarily a long diatribe of opinion, either. It's just nice to know that someone read a post and left a comment to show they were there.

I sort of wonder - is there some kind of blog etiquette that I am unaware of regarding comments? If you have never been to the person's blog before and read it for the first time and never come back again, is it okay for you to comment? I say yes. Do you have to have read a person's blog for a specific amount of time before it is okay to come out of "blog-stalking/lurking" and leave a comment? I don't think so.

Here's what I think. Everyone likes comments. Think about it. Have you ever read a blog or heard a conversation where someone says something like, "And then this person I have NEVER EVEN HEARD OF BEFORE had the GALL to leave a comment on my BLOG! Can you even believe that?!" No, it is more likely you will read or hear something about how everyone loves being acknowledged. Unless I am unaware of some set of rules out there in blog land regarding the who/why/where/when and how of proper commenting, I am going to assume that comments are a good, positive, always welcome thing.

(Unless you're a commenter who says things like, "Your kids are hideously ugly and I am hiding in your bushes." In that case, my neighborhood watch program is in full force, I own 23 guns and I'm a quadruple black belt in karate. Plus you're wrong about my kids.)

So, here's the deal. I'm throwing down the gauntlet. Let's try a little experiment.

For the next day or 2 days or week or rest of your life (you set your own time limit) let's leave comments on all of the posts we read. Really. Every.One. Make your presence known! Leave happy, kind, polite, grateful and supportive comments when you read what someone took the time to write. I'm not saying you have to agree with everyone... because wouldn't life be boring if we all agreed with each other all the time? But I bet it would make someone's day if they got a slew of unexpected comments on a post. Or even just one unexpected comment. Don't you think?

Come on... let's spread some internet sunshine. Are you with me?

It's a good idea. I like getting comments, I should leave them more often.

Scintillating and thought-provoking.

How was that?

I love comments. Even if someone left a comment that said "Hi" and nothing else, I would love it. It sometimes bugs me when I know people read, but have no desire to acknowledge or give me a "LOL" or even disagree. Please, just engage, somehow. Humor me. Being in a fishbowl isn't so bad, sometimes, but I'd rather be at a roundtable. (And I'm NOT talking in scouting terms.) Or, in another animal analogy, if I were a pet, I wouldn't be a goldfish; I'd be a puppy dog.

Anyway, my point is, when I know that several people read my posts but don't have anything to say about them, it makes me wonder what I did wrong. Was it boring? Offensive? Am I getting repetetive? Should I bother publishing anymore? It's kind of deflating.
On the other hand, perhaps it drives me to try harder, and write better. And maybe that's why my posts are becoming less frequent.

P.S. Gerb, in case I don't post anything during this proposed "Comment Freely" trial period, feel free to go back and leave a comment on any of my old posts. ;)

Rebecca said...

P.P.S. Put down your red pencil, I just realized that I spelled "repetitive" incorrectly.

Gerb said...

Dang, you're quick.

I'm your BFF Rebecca's sister-in-law. We've even met before when she lived in Provo. I very much enjoy your blog, but have never commented before. I didn't know you enjoyed comments so much. Now I know and so I leave you one. -Kaelyn

I just clicked over from Light Refreshments and how can I, in good conscience, not leave a comment?

I know of TONS of people who read my blog and only a handful that comment regularly. I want to shout from the rooftops that they should always comment! Comments are welcomed and encouraged! So, yes. I totally agree.

now you're going to know that I read all of your blogs.

Hi Gerb, I read your blog often and enjoy it thoroughly, yet am fearful of being a comment pest, so I don't comment often - but if I commented on all your posts they'd be complimentary because you're fun to read!

Totally!

by the way...I'm afraid to interpret anymore...been too long! You're awesome!

Rebecca said...

Complimentary? Gerb, have you been paying out for comments?!

Just joking. I couldn't resist. Besides, I'm leaving you another comment. This is 3.

You know I'm up for it. I love reading your blogs, they're always so fun! And as a side note, I wish I was going to be out there for Halloween this year. Are you guys doing a haunted house again? Wish I could jump in and help out just to get special treatment Halloween night!

Four words come to mind when I read this post...

Dazzling!
Great!
Spectacular!
and Excellent!

Gina said...

The pressure is on, and nothing comes to mind except, "Great post."

Missed you on Saturday. All the girls were missing you. I'm afraid I would have only had half the crowd if they knew you weren't going to show up. So, thanks for not telling anyone of your absence beforehand.

Count me in too.

I agree.

And thank you for the comments you leave me. I love reading them.

Popular girl--23 comments already and it hasn't even been 24 hours. WAHOO FOR YOU!

I love this idea. I do try to leave comments when I can come up with something witty and I'm feeling sassy or energetic. Lately I haven't had that mojo so my commenting has been off. Thanks for this kick in the pants to get my mojo back!

(Now you can totally say "And this person who I DON'T EVEN KNOW had the nerve to leave a comment on my blog!!"

Linn said...

Fabulous idea! So I have never commented on your blog, as you have already figured out, but I couldn't pass up a challenge. Being a friend of Jason's, I saw your blog a while back. And I happen to love it! I was raised with eight siblings, minored in ASL in college and just think you are fabulous. So there you go. You got my comment, times extra--thanks again!

I love your blog and have been a fairly steady reader since I discovered you through 4P's. I have to tell you I am glad you called all of us "lurkers" out.

Great idea! I love to read your blogs, they brighten my day :)

Love your blog!!! Read it regularly, but rarely comment. I'll try harder. :)

Great idea!! I never feel like anyone reads my blog, yes it is private but I do have plenty of invited family members. They say they read it, but no one ever says anything. It makes you feel lonely for sure, or just un-interesting! I have almost stopped leaving comments now too.... time to break the cycle! Thanks Gerb!

Gerb said...

Broughton- YOU're awesome!

Laura- YOU rock, and thanks. It was a lot of fun.

IG- Right back at ya!

Amber- That's what I figure. If I like 'em I should leave 'em.

SP- Perfect words. They make me feel scintillating and smart. ;)

Deb- Awesome!

Bec- I know what you mean. Often I will write a post, get maybe 2 comments then think, "What happened? Did everyone disagree? Was I offensive?" I'm actually having fun with this whole leaving comments thing. It's sort of liberating to de-lurk.

Kaelyn- I do remember meeting you. And I love that you read my blog. Thanks for the comment!

Tawnya- Thanks for stopping by! And I couldn't agree more. Bring on the comments!

Camille- I love it.

BTM- I read every one of your posts. I'll have to start commenting more often.

ST (S's Mom)- Thanks so much for the comment! You could comment 3 times on every post and I would LOVE it!

Kristi- If you ever do decide to terp again, try conference. You get some extra help, if you know what I mean. ;)

Amanda- You should! That would be fun. (and I would feel super popular)

T5- I know! I'm loving it!

Katie- We are going to put up some of the decorations but not everything. We decided to cut back this year and try to get the front room finished and a fence in. Both are still in the works.

Allen- That makes me laugh every time I read it.

Gina- I think we should not talk about your baby shower because it makes me too sad that I couldn't come. There are so many people I was excited to see but 2 trips to SLC in one day were not in the stars for me last weekend.

Cari- You're on!

Michelle- I love reading your posts. You are an amazing mom!

MHS- Thanks for reading... and now thanks for commenting also!

Martha- Thanks! And I agree completely - comments are so much fun to get!

SO- I know what you mean. I often read posts and then feel like I have to mull them over in my mind in order to compose a witty response... and then I often forget to go back and leave a comment. But I would be willing to bet that most bloggers would welcome a mundane comment over none at all!

Linn- Sounds like we should be friends to me. =0) Thanks for de-lurking.

R&N- Me, too! And thanks.

R5- Thanks. That means a lot to me.

Rachel- Thanks for reading and for breaking the ice. Now that you've left your first comment all others will be easy! It's just taking that first step...

Cami- Rock on!

Gerb said...

Cara- I will have to mend my ways and leave comments when I read yours as well.

GaeLynn said...

I read your blog every day and am so disappointed if it hasn't been updated...now you know!

Gerb said...

GaeLynn- Well, I do hate to disappoint... I guess I better get going on a new one for today! ;0)

Amen, SISTA!! I was sent here by a friend who is answering your call to arms by passing it along to all of her lurkers. I do not lurk. Can't. Have to comment. Was one of your commenters serious about being afraid to be a "comment pest" ? What the heck is a "comment pest"? I could use a couple of those on MY blog. Here's how I've dealt with the silence: I have a hit counter that shows me the URL of people who read, so I know there are people out there. It doesn't give me names, telephone numbers or shoe sizes, but it lets me know I'm not alone.

I never assume that people haven't liked what i've written (mostly because that would be admitting I care about people not liking what i've written). And I know that there are a lot of people out there who are listeners and readers but not expressers. Still, it's like putting your warm hand-shake ready self out there only to have people smile down at your hand without offering theirs.

I've plead for comments before - maybe because I'm old and so many of my friends are old (which can mean tech-challenged) but I've NEVER gotten the number of comments you've gotten here. Count yourself lucky girl - but don't count on getting this kind of response on a regular basis. They'll all lapse back into silence. They always do.

Gerb said...

K- Welcome! And thanks for the comment.

I agree that there are a lot of people out there who are listeners and readers but not expressers. And I think that's okay. But it's still fun to get comments from them every once in a while!

Corine said...

Wow! This comment makes the 33rd for you today! Way to go Gerb! Perhaps I should do this on my blog and find out if anyone besides a sibling here and there actually read mine!

PS I LOVE comments!

I took "the dare" from Mr. Z. It's funny because I often don't leave comments on blogs I visit because I don't want to seem "strange". You make a good point. Most people like comments: except my husband. He disabled this feature on his own blog.. He's sort of an internet snob:)

Gerb said...

Corine- You should totally do this!

Bee- I know what you mean, I have always felt the same way. But over the last couple of days I've done it anyway... and it's nice to de-lurk, I think. I've seen your comments on Z's blog. Welcome and thanks for stopping by!

annette said...

Looks like I re-joined blogland just in time!:) I love this idea!

Gerb said...

Annette- Welcome back! And thanks for the comments. ;)

I agree with you 100%!

Hey, it's me, the person you have totally heard of before that has the gall to never leave a comment on your blog! Unbelievable! But just for the record, every time I read here on your random thoughts, sunshine scatters all over my internet. ty

hintonrae said...

You rock, and I agree. I need to post this on my own blog so it's not just you, Cee, Jason, my mom, Shirley, and various and assorted others posting comments every now and then. Love it. ;)

Chelle! said...

You are amazing!!! I love your idea of spreading sunshine. I think that we all will benefit from it.

Maybe this is just the opportunity I need to introduce myself. About a year or more ago I stumbled across your blog while searching for something, like school lunch ideas, and you had a series of posts about it. (Although the fact that you're LDS makes me think those posts may have been recommended to me... regardless...) I thought you were so stinkin' funny I bookmarked your site. A few weeks ago I revisited your blog and laughed out loud to each post. I feel sort of like a peeping Tom, but you're just too interesting to resist. My curiosity keeps getting the better of me.

Hope you don't mind. Love you're writing style and fun experiences. Also, as a girl whose always wanted 8 kids, you're an inspiration and a testament that it can be done with a retainment of some sanity. (I've started to wonder after having 2 kids so far.) =-)
